Lady using skin lightening soap with kojic acid

Why we Don’t add Kojic Acid to Turmeric Soap

Kojic acid is commonly used as a skin-lightening agent in various products. It is often marketed as a natural solution for achieving a lighter complexion. Many manufacturers incorporate kojic acid into their turmeric soap, promoting it as a product that offers skin-whitening and brightening benefits.

WE DON’T!

Some of you may remember the last skin-lightening miracle ingredient, hydroquinone, which was found in many skin-lightening creams, ointments, and soaps up until it was eventually banned on the 10th August 1990.

This so-called miracle ingredient was discovered to cause severe disfigurement and posed a health risk to users. Ultimately, the creams led to hyperpigmentation, also called ochronosis, resulting in the darker patches on the skin. As a result, instead of achieving the lighter complexion they desired, users ended up with skin marked by these dark spots.

Hyperpigmentation as a result of skin lightening solutions.

It is with this in mind that we thoroughly researched kojic acid, its benefits and the possible side effects or damage that it could cause, and ultimately decided that it was an ingredient that we would not be prepared to place on our skin and therefore on your skin as well.

Kojic Acid – Benefits and Possible Side Effects

What is kojic acid, and what are its potential benefits and side effects when used in soaps and other skincare products designed to lighten or brighten the skin?

Kojic acid is a natural compound. It is derived from fungi, particularly Aspergillus oryzae, and is also a byproduct of the fermentation process of certain foods like soy sauce, sake, and rice wine.

Even though it is naturally sourced, kojic acid is often used in synthetic or stabilized forms in skincare products to enhance its shelf life and effectiveness.

Benefits of Kojic Acid

  • Skin Brightening – inhibits melanin production, reduces dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.
  • Dark Spots & Scars – Helps fade acne scars, sun spots, and age spots.
  • Antibacterial Properties – Inhibits bacteria growth on the skin.
  • Fungal Infection Treatment – Often used in creams to treat fungal skin conditions.

Warnings and Cautions With Products Containing Kojic Acid

  • Skin Irritation & Sensitivity – Using it for a long time can make your skin red, flaky, and irritated, which can make it more prone to damage.
  • Increased Sun Sensitivity – Reduces melanin production. This increases the risk of sun damage, so it is recommended that you constantly use a sunblock while using Kojic acid products. Sunblocks have their own set of hazards.
  • Hypopigmentation – Excessive use may result in light patches on the skin, causing an unnatural and uneven tone.
  • Allergic Reactions & Contact Dermatitis – May cause redness, itching, or inflammation, especially with prolonged use.
  • Potential Long-Term Discoloration – Prolonged use could result in dark spots and patches, also known as ochronosis.

How to avoid the possible side effects of Kojic Acid

  • Use Kojic Acid in Moderation – Try to avoid using products with kojic acid more than 2 to 3 times per week,
  • Take Breaks – Use for a month to two, and then take a break for a month.
  • Always Wear Sunscreen – Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher to protect against sun damage and prevent skin darkening.
  • Moisturize & Hydrate – Helps reduce irritation and maintain a healthy skin barrier.

Is Kojic Acid Needed in Turmeric Soap

Quite frankly – no!

Turmeric by itself is an amazing ingredient that covers all the bases. It brightens skin, evens skin tone, and does not have any of the side effects that are found with Kojic acid.

Turmeric soap with laurel may be safely used 2 to 3 times daily as opposed to soaps containing kojic acid that should only be used 2 to 3 times per week.

Advantages of Turmeric Soap with Laurel

Turmeric soap with added laurel, also a natural ingredient, has so many advantages for your complexion and is 100% safe to use as often as you like.
