What is Pure Olive Oil Soap or  Castile Soap?

Castille soap is a pure soap made with olive oil as the base. This soap is gentle, moisturizing, and has great cleaning properties. It is ideal for those who have sensitive skin and who have reactions to normal commercial soaps, or to soaps that contain fragrances that aggravate their skin.

Castile soap originated in the Castile region of Spain, where it was first made from pure olive oil in the 12th century. Most soaps in that era were made with animal fats.  Soap makers in the area discovered that olive oil, which was abundant at that time, made a soap that was soft and gentle and this soap soon became famous throughout Europe.

Pure soap is a soap that contains no fillers, no fragrances, and no perfume. It should have only 3 ingredients which would be the oil used (Mediterranean Pomace Olive oil), Sodium hydroxide (Lye or caustic soda), and water. The oil and the caustic solution combine and react to form pure soap.

In traditional soap, ash from a fire was used instead of caustic soda. However, the exact qty of ash needed for the soap batch could not be determined accurately which could result in soap that was either too caustic or too oily. As a result, as time progressed, caustic soda replaced ash in soap making.
